FTP Help - Cute FTP

We are providing this information for the benefit of our customers only and do not offer any guarantees that these instructions will work for you.  If you need additional support, please phone us at (519)457-3505.  New clients welcome.

This program may require that you download and register the program for a fee.  A great place to download programs is TUCOWS or STROUDS.

CuteFTP:

Download CuteFTP from CuteFTP site.  If you use windows 95, 98 or NT, please be sure to download the 32 bit version. Follow the download instructions on their website.  Once installed, you might benefit by reading their usage guide.  Otherwise, you might be able to get by with these basic guidelines:

1.  When you first open CuteFTP, it displays the FTP Site manager (first icon on top left). This lists the ftp sites that you have saved on the left side. You will want to "ADD a Folder" Call it "Personal FTP Sites" if there isn't one there called Personal FTP Sites already.

2.  Next, click on that directory on the left to make sure it is highlighted. Then on right side there is a button called "ADD SITE" You will see a screen similar to the one below.   Just fill yours out with the information we have provided for your website. The "intial local directory" is your hard drive. You might enter something like:  c:\mywebsite there if that is where you store your files to be uploaded.

3.  Once you have the info in, hit OK, then on the FTP Site Manager Screen again...hit the Connect button or just double click on the name of the directory you want to connect to on the right.

4.You will soon see a Login Screen.  Just hit the OK button at bottom.

5. There are three sections on the screen once you connect. Across the top is the connection information. You can see what commands are being issued to the server.

6.  On the left side are the files on your hard drive. On the right side are the files on the server. To upload to the server, just highlight the file, and drag and drop to the right side. Reverse to download. You will only get a prompt to rename or cancel if you are downloading from the server to your hard drive.  If you are uploading files to the server, it will simply overwrite what is there. (be careful!)

7.  To move up to a higher directory, double click on bar at the top of the list of files and folders (there is a small green arrow to the left of it).   To open a folder, simply double click on it to open.  Remember that if you double click on a file, you will begin downloading it!  Make sure you have the right directory open on your hard drive (left) before you start downloading.  The simplest way to upload or download is to highlight the file or files and then drag and drop them.

8. The three main buttons you will use are 1. STOP button, on far right of task bar.  2. Disconnect button, third from left. and 3. Site Manager button, 1st icon on left.  The server will time out after 400 seconds of inactivity.   If you wish to continue using CuteFTP, you will need to hit the STOP button a couple times, then DISCONNECT, then go to SITE MANAGER and reconnect.

9.  Of course, there is a lot more to the program than this.   If you have other questions, take a look in the help files or on the CuteFTP website or give us a call!  If you are using ftp for the first time on a site we have set up for you, please be diligent in only maintaining current files on the server.   If you are not going to use an image or file, please delete from server.   Also, there will be files in your directory that you dont understand.  Most likely these are regarding the frontpage extensions and should be left alone.

10.  Last thing.   Under NO circumstances should you upload copyrighted programs or pornography to the server.   Either will be cause for removal of your website.

More programs will be available soon.   Please let us know if you need any help!
